MOVEMBER FACTS
About Movember

The Movember Foundation is a global not-for-profit, charitable organisation which runs the men’s health initiative, Movember. Each year, we are responsible for the appearance of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces around the globe, with the aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health.

Movember is a month where Mo Bros put down their razors and grow a Mo. Through their moustache, each Mo Bro, supported by their Mo Sistas, generates money via donations and conversation around the subject of men’s health. The rules are simple, register online at Movember.com, start the month of November clean-shaven and grow a Mo.

As an organisation, we have a goal to change the attitudes men hold toward their health. The moustache is the symbol by which we generate the necessary awareness and funds in order to be able to achieve this ambition. It is a simple and effective way to reach our number one objective – awareness – as during Movember, each Mo Bro effectively becomes a walking billboard promoting men’s health.

While Movember is relatively new in Ireland, it started in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 as a challenge to bring back the moustache. In 2004 the campaign evolved to become a fundraising event for prostate cancer, raising AUD$55,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.  Since then Movember has expanded globally, having raised more than €175 million for its beneficiary partners in Australia, New Zealand, UK, US, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Finland, the Netherlands Spain and the Czech Republic. As a direct result of these campaigns, men's awareness of health issues has improved with the campaign spreading health messages directly to millions around the world.

Movember will continue to work toward changing established habits and attitudes to make men aware of the health risks they face, thereby increasing early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment. We encourage you to join us, as every moustache makes a difference.

PROSTATE CANCER FACTS
Prostate Cancer Facts

1. Men in Ireland have a 1 in 8 chance of developing prostate cancer during the course of their lifetime.
2. Prostate cancer confined to the prostate gland is much easier to treat and cure than that which has escaped outside the gland.
3. Early, curable prostate cancer often does not have symptoms.  A simple blood test can be carried out by a GP to help identify which men need further investigations.
4. Eating a good diet and exercising regularly can reduce your risk of prostate cancer.

Risk

The cause of prostate cancer is unknown at present. But there are things called risk factors that can increase your chance of getting the disease. These include:

- Age: Your risk increases as you get older. Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer are aged over 50 years.

- Family history: Men whose brother or father developed prostate cancer at a young age have an increased risk.

- Race: African-American and African-Caribbean men are more at risk than other ethnic groups.

- Diet: Men who eat a lot of red meat and high-fat dairy products and not enough green vegetables have a slightly higher chance of getting prostate cancer.

Men who do vigorous exercise regularly are thought to have a lesser risk of getting prostate cancer.

QUOTES
'At moments, the horror of having cancer overwhelmed me. Then I visited the headquarters of the Irish Cancer Society, and talked to the nurses on duty. They were a calming resource, who put what was happening into context, and I depended on their charity at times of difficult transition. When I recovered, I was determined to give something back.'
-Michael Murphy, RTE Broadcaster, Psychologist and Prostate Cancer Survivor

‘Being part of Movember made my year, the brotherhood, the atmosphere, the hot men and all for a good cause. I’m just itching to do it all again!’
-Conor Wilson, GCN, Gay Community News

‘I thought I knew funky before I got involved in Movember. I realise now I knew nothing about The Funk. Movember changed my life and it could change yours.’
-Joe O’Shea, Journalist & TV Personality

‘Being bald can have its upsides, for example I haven’t been to the barbers in years and haven’t bought a bottle of shampoo in eight years so I’m long past worrying about my shiny patch! However when the opportunity presented itself to grow a ‘MO’ for the month of Movember – I jumped at the chance! I am going to lovingly grow and groom this wonderful facial feature and I only have these precious 4 weeks to show off my twitching moustache. I hope to be the envy of all my Mo-less peers. Who knows it may even become a permanent fixture but my wife may have something to say about that! So please grow the word and support the Movember campaign and raise money along the way for prostate cancer.’
-John McCormack, CEO, Irish Cancer Society

'If Willie O’Dea (Minister for Defense) looks that hot with one damn it so can we, our upper lips will feel upper class and Magnum PI drives a Ferrari!!'
-Dirty Epics, Dublin Rock Band

‘The recent news that the average tache can accommodate up to a pint and a half of Guinness in its folds per year was just the motivation I needed to both raise awareness of prostate cancer and fulfill a long held dream of at last looking like a pubescent boy!’
-Tom Dunne, Radio Host, Newstalk

‘The reaction to my tache hasn’t been too bad so far. Although my 3 year old niece did say that she doesn’t like my hairy lip”. I presume the reaction will get worse as my mo matures, but its for a serious cause – prostate cancer – so its worth whatever heckles I get.’
-Jarleth Regan, Comedian
